Alex Cross: Or, Tyler Perry’s Why Am I In This Movie?

If you were looking to fill the role of a forensic psychologist/homicide detective who is tasked with tracking down a ruthless serial killer, Tyler Perry probably wouldn't be the first name to spring to mind. Heck, he probably wouldn't be the 50th name to spring to mind. Yet there's the writer/director/actor/one-man movie industry on the poster for Alex Cross, the would-be launching pad for a new film franchise based on James Patterson's bestselling crime fiction series about the titular investigator, previously portrayed by Morgan Freeman in a pair of moderately successful movies from over a decade ago. Looking at the somber expression Perry wears both on the one-sheet and throughout the movie, one can't help but wonder what's going through his head. Is it, "Boy, I gotta catch this guy." Or, "Remember, you aren't Madea right now -- no smiling." Or maybe he's just thinking, "What the hell am I doing in this hot mess anyway?"

Razzie Awards 2014: Picks, Predictions and Oversights

Tomorrow morning, the nominations for the most prestigious and beloved movies and performances of 2013 (and August: Osage County) will be announced for the 86th Academy Awards. This morning, however, the nominations for the polar opposite Golden Raspberry Awards dropped and since there's little chance of much overlap (though The Lone Ranger could sneak in an Oscar nomination for makeup, but that's about it) it's only fair that we give the year's most horrendous work its due. While this year's list of Razzie nods got a lot right (Grown Ups 2 leads the pack with a worthy eight nominations and Lindsay Lohan wound up in three categories for three different movies) some clunkers managed to slip through the cracks (how the hell did The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Oz the Great and Powerful, R.I.P.D., Man of Steel and Gangster Squad go unscathed?). The "winners" of the Razzies are announced on Saturday, March 1 (that's right, one night before the Oscars) but we're picking the movies and performances that will win, that should win, and which ones were snubbed.

Madea Goes to Lionsgate

Madea Goes to Lionsgate

Tyler Perry, whom I always think of as The Busiest Man in showbiz, is about to get a little busier. The writer/director just signed a three-year first look deal with Lionsgate, wherein he has promised the studio three more films in addition to giving them first dibs on any other films of his within that time frame. The studio already has two upcoming Perry movies, The Family That Preys which comes out in September, and Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail, set for a February release, neither of which are included in the deal.
