Disney Needs to Stop… Almost Everything It's Doing With the latest news (here, gleaned from an interview in Disney's in-house magazine) that Disney could possibly remake The Black Hole and/or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, I have just one question: How many more of these remakes are possible? I mean, how many original cheesy Disney movies still exist that haven't yet been remade? ...No, really, I need to know how prepared I need to be, because it's starting to feel like when the world ends, the only things that will survive the apocalypse will be cockroaches and old Disney movies.

At any rate, The Black Hole might actually be a good one to remake in the current movie climate, since it was based on comics and since it's one of the lesser-known of the old live-action Disney movies. So I applaud that. But 20,000 Leagues? Um, don't we already have about 17 versions of that? Although, if you think about it, keeping Disney busy remaking its old live-action catalog might save us from the studio's new and "original" concepts, such as the umpteenth High School Musical movie or musical or pop-up book or live-action robot (you know it's coming...), or even more original "ideas" like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, about a Chihuahua from that prestigious zipcode who finds herself lost in ... gasp! ... Mexico. It sounds ridiculous and vaguely racist. Shame on you, Disney. And Drew Barrymore? How could you? If you are worried my point is that Disney should stop making movies altogether, you're (mostly) wrong. I do still approve of all things Pixar, and I am looking forward to Bolt despite my better judgment. But I want Disney to stop making bad movies that seem focused only on making more and more and more money. Because, let's get real, no one can claim that College Road Trip was made for artistic purposes.
