The Muppets: How Bret McKenzie Went From Conchords to Kermit

As one-half of the New Zealand folk duo Flight of the Conchords, Bret McKenzie has toured the world with his onstage partner Jemaine Clement, serenading audiences with such hilarious tunes as "Bowie", "Foux du Fafa" and "Robots." Now he's helping another crop of characters get their musical comedy groove on: those lovable, indefatigable Muppets. McKenzie served as music supervisor on their highly anticipated comeback vehicle, The Muppets, a job that required him to oversee productions of all of the movie's original songs, including two that he wrote himself. McKenzie spoke with TWoP by phone from L.A. about growing up as part of the Muppet generation, plans for a Conchords reunion and how he learned that Muppet chickens don't sing.

Top Chef Insanity Starts Now

Top Chef Insanity Starts Now The angels are singing! The new season of Top Chef kicks off tonight, and I got to chat with host/judges Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio about what to expect. Over the course of the (very) long conference call, P and T discussed their new judge, writer Toby Young, a pretty rad line-up of guest judges, their own guilty pleasures and the ingredient they're most sick of. They mentioned only one of the new contestants -- Fabio -- by name, so do with that info what you will. They also took on haters who have implied that Top Chef is an easy ticket to success for lazy chefs, and if you're so inclined you can read about what they had to say at NY Mag's Grub Street blog. Otherwise, read on for the highlights.

What Happens to a Jemaine Dream Deferred?

What Happens to a Jemaine Dream Deferred? I know I speak for the legions of members of the cult of Jemaine Clement (you know who you are, ladies and germs!) when I say I was aghast to learn that he of luscious lips and gently sloping forehead wed his longtime girlfriend Miranda Manasiadis over the weekend. Apparently Jemaine had been quietly dating the ho for some time and decided to make an honest woman of her. Damn you and your chivalrous Kiwi ways, Jemaine!

J.O.N.A.S. Goes FOTC and Its Driving Me M.A.D.

J.O.N.A.S. Goes FOTC and Its Driving Me M.A.D.

So the uberpopular Jonas Brothers with their mop top hair and their innocent sugar music and non-threatening teenage appeal have long had a Disney channel show in the works. Their surefire ratings hit dubbed J.O.N.A.S was going to take the trio of brothers and set them in the wild world of spies. Now that actually sounds like it could be mildly entertaining if I was 12. A little Alias, a little Spy Kids and a little Monkees and bam, you've got a series. What could be wrong with that? It's better than the premise of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
