Jane By Design: ABC Family Hearts the ’80s

Jane By Design: ABC Family Hearts the ’80s

From the fashion to the lingo to the logo (and, let's face it, the title itself), this show is so hilariously stuck in the '80s that I actually had to look it up to make sure that it wasn't meant to be set thirty years prior. I would have still questioned it, had it not been for the use of smartphones -- well played, Jane By Design. I guess this just leaves one question as far as this inevitably short-lived series goes: Do the writers know less about being a high school student or about working in the fashion industry?

Where Are You From, ABC Family? Planet Loser?

Where Are You From, ABC Family? Planet Loser? Greek scribe Carter Covington has adapted the awesome 90s teen flick 10 Things I Hate About You for ABC Family. And yet, as I type this I'm still sitting here waiting for a Captain Ron series to be created. (Seriously.) Like the movie, the half-hour comedy will follow two sisters, one openly bitchy, and one, well, also bitchy, but popular and not quoting Betty Friedan like the other one, as they deal with high school. Sadly, you can't say things like "beer-flavored nipples" and "I'm a crack-whore who should have made my skeazy boyfriend wear a condom" on ABC Family (probably), so this will likely be considerably less awesome than the original, I don't care how popular Greek is. Let's just hope the smut novelist/principal character is included. And that Allison Janney plays her. Which she won't. Death to this thing!
Beverly Hills Nannies: Family Friendly Reality TV Is Real Boring

ABC Family launched Beverly Hills Nannies last night and as expected, it fits with the family-friendly nature of their network... which means that while Beverly Hills is in the title, none of the shenanigans of the Real Housewives or the likes of Audrina are happening here. Or at least none of the public fights and embarrassing behavior are on display. Instead, its about well-dressed young men and women who have the job of being nanny to the rich (and sometimes famous) and how they occasionally have to pick up poop after animals or learn about vegan diets. It's all very innocuous, and terribly dull.

Everyone's favorite (well, my favorite) Criminal Minds profiler will continue to hunt down serial killers next season on the CBS drama.

Baby Daddy: In Case You Ever Wanted a Weekly Version of Three Men and a Baby

To say the least, ABC Family's original programming is hit or miss. While I base my entire Tuesday night around the viewing of Pretty Little Liars, I cringe every time a promo for Secret Life of the American Teenager appears (seriously, Shailene Woodley, you're way more awesome than this mess of a show -- please go join the cast of Shameless). Yet perhaps the worst part of this otherwise mostly pleasant network is the multi-cam sitcom Melissa & Joey, a painfully unfunny show about a "manny" (that's a man-nanny for those of you who don't know) portrayed by Joey Lawrence who is hired by an overworked Melissa (everybody's favorite teen witch, Melissa Joan Hart) to help her raise her niece and nephew. While I've laughed more at the Advil commercials in between the show than at the antics of the clearly desperate '90s duo, ABC Family must have decided that they've found their own terrible "niche" when it comes to multi-cam sitcoms.

Other Networks That Need Live Topical Talk Shows

Other Networks That Need Live Topical Talk Shows

With news that AMC is planning to do a Watch What Happens Live-type talk show, we're thinking that more networks should be cashing in on this low-budget, highly-entertaining type of exclusive entertainment. Taking a page from Andy Cohen, who drove his Bravo behind-the-scenes series to success, here's how other networks could run their WHW-style shows.

Teenage Dirtbags: The 8 Worst Things About Teen Spirit

Teenage Dirtbags: The 8 Worst Things About Teen Spirit

For every well-intentioned project ABC Family puts on air -- Switched at Birth, Cyberbully, even their recent "Delete Digital Drama" campaign -- there's about a billion stupid, trite and silly ones; take last night's original movie, Teen Spirit. Yes, at first glance it didn't sound like it was going to be too terrible: A popular girl dies and, to go to heaven instead of hell, she has to help the biggest nerd in the school win prom queen. But painful it was. It was every teen movie cliché stuck into one, and the fixation on death (and dirty jokes) certainly didn't help. I even started out trying to write just the five worst things about the movie, but I ended up with eight. Here goes:

Today we learned a little bit more about Ashton Kutcher's new gig, GLAAD chose CBS as Most Homophobic Network Ever (kidding!), and Charlene Yi signed on to a show way past it's prime.

Who Didn't See This One Coming… ?

Who Didn't See This One Coming… ?

Well, probably everyone, since I think I'm one of like 12 people who watches this show and has a problem separating actors from their characters. Anyway, Greek (it's on that little ABC Family network, the one that shows the knocked up teen and the kid with no belly button) cutie Scott Michael Forster was arrested for DUI. We here at TWoP usually overlook infractions of the drug and alcohol variety since we don't care so much about what people do in their own personal time so long as it doesn't mess with our shows getting made or whatnot. But in this case, art is truly imitating life and I just couldn't really freaking help myself.
