It's a very good day to be Elisabeth Moss. She snagged a nomination for her role as Peggy on Mad Men and another for her miniseries Top of the Lake. Also, if you are working at Netflix, there's probably a big ol’ party happening right now. It is not, however, such a great day to be anyone involved in Parks & Rec (aside from Amy Poehler), The Americans, Justified, Orphan Black or New Girl. See who got nominated for what and get our initial reactions to the announcements.

Jimmy Kimmel and Kerry Washington got up early to read us the Emmy nominations, with Kimmel in his pajamas acting like an idiot doing nothing to help our mood as the Outstanding Comedy announcements were made. We didn't expect everything on our wish list to be acknowledged, but the fact that Community and Parks and Recreation were absent from the big category made us want to smash something, Hulk-style. If only we could get zapped by some gamma radiation before the actual awards on September 23.

It's Emmy Award nomination day, which means that we all get insanely frustrated when quality programs get snubbed, while some old standbys get put on the list out of habit. While there were quite a few welcome surprises this year, and some truly deserving television spotlighted, it's pretty clear that the Emmy voters did not take heed and follow our wish list very closely. On the plus side, while watching the nomination announcements this morning, we got to see Grey's Anatomy's Chandra Wilson and Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons read off the main categories, and we love both of them. So that was something. Let's break it down category by category, shall we?

I hate Emmy nomination announcement morning. I come in to work all full of summer happiness and then end up feeling annoyed for the rest of the day. Every. Single. Year. I knew it was going to happen based on the short lists, but still, how is Boston Legal still considered one of the best shows on television? It certainly isn't better than The Wire. I'm about ready to throw in the towel on this antiquated awards show. Either that or start a vigilante group to go after nomination voters in the night. Oh, that's a great idea for a reality show. Irritated television critic goes crazy and starts posting pictures of Dexter in people's homes, threatening that he'll come after them unless they start choosing better shows. That said, I am happy that Dexter made the list, and even happier that Grey's Anatomy didn't.
