Nerd Alert: Does the Doctor Hate Harry Potter?

This is probably the geekiest article I'll write this month, but with my love for all things Doctor Who and Harry Potter (I just saw Daniel Radcliffe naked in Equus last night!), I just couldn't help myself. According to the reputable source The Sun current Doctor David Tennant nixed a proposal that would have Harry Potter mastermind J.K. Rowling guesting on the show's annual Christmas special feature .

American Idol: Why It’s Worth Another Look

American Idol: Why It’s Worth Another Look

It's been a number of years before we had anything remotely kind to say about American Idol, and when we got a full screener of this season's premiere, we definitely rolled our eyes. It seemed like a sign of desperation because the show usually just sends critics teasers for each season, not full episodes. So out of sheer curiosity (and boredom during that off week during the holidays), we decided to check it out. And, well, it was surprisingly decent. We'd go so far as to even say watchable, almost to the point of enjoyable. And if the premiere is any indication of the direction the show is taking this year, maybe we'll grouch less about having to sit through yet another competitive reality singing show. This is not to say that it's blow-your-mind DVR-worthy but it is definitely leaps and bounds above the last few Simon-less seasons. So why the dramatic improvement? Here's our take on the big changes:

Saturday Night Live: Daniel Radcliffe’s Least Magical Sketches

Looks like there is life after Harry Potter for The Boy (Actor) Who Lived. Young British thesp Daniel Radcliffe demonstrated some strong comic chops during his debut gig as a Saturday Night Live host. Unfortunately, his personal charm wasn't enough to overcome the show's mediocre writing and misconceived sketches. Here were the five least magical skits of the night:

TWoP 10: Bubble Shows That Shouldn't Be Renewed

It's that time of year when networks are finalizing their fall line-ups and deciding which current shows to keep or cancel. And while we'd like to see underrated procedural Detroit 1-8-7 get another chance, as well as the ridiculous, nonsensical guilty pleasure Off the Map continue, there are a plenty of other "bubble" shows that truly deserve to get their bubbles burst, freeing their casts and producers to seek better luck elsewhere. Here are the ones that most need to be axed, for everyone's sake:

NBC: We've Got Lots of New Shows, We Swear

NBC: We've Got Lots of New Shows, We Swear

The 2010-11 NBC upfront presentation was so long that we're not sure who'd be more bored by a detailed recap of the event, you or us. Suffice it to say that the presentation began with a clip of Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy making jokes about his brief, ill-advised marriage to Nikki Finke, getting in a dig about President Obama's citizenship and then talking about how the "more colorful" slogan might sound like a "no-mess painting kit for pre-school girls" but is really more than that. Then there was some random talk about how the network would act like a dangerous Eastern European woman in order to gain advertisers. That was the highlight... it got less interesting from there, unless you are really, really, really into football announcers, in which case it picked up somewhere in the middle, and then it just slowly spiraled downward until it finally ended and I got to see Jerry Seinfeld on the esclalor. Oh, and did I mention that aside from an awkward appearance from Jimmy Fallon and his guitar, and the football announcers, there was a dearth of talent on stage? Guess they saved them for all of the swanky after-parties. But anyway, NBC previewed a bunch of new shows for both the fall and midseason to help us get an early start on deciding what we'll want to watch - or avoid.

Trailer Previews: Death Kisses, Dark Knight and Keanu Barada Nikto A handful of trailers and other filmic appetizers have come out for the holiday weekend, hoping to grab their share of movie-goers' attention some time between the third round of hotdogs and passing out on the sofa. You could hoist yourself up and head out to see a new release in the theater, during which you might see some of these new trailers, but sit back and relax. I've got them right here, within easy reach of your antacids and favorite pillow.
