Shatner Asks the Tough Questions

In July, 2007, the Biography Channel announced that William Shatner would be given his own talk show, and the world froze. Babies stopped crying, birds stopped flying and dogs stopped licking themselves. Then nothing happened for over a year. Cut to today: the Biography Channel announces that Shatner's Raw Nerve will air on August 19. Nobody notices.

Well, except us. Because we love the Shat, and because we wanted to know who the hell he would be talking to on his weekly show, where he will reportedly "probe sensitive subjects." Easy for him to say -- the man's been probed more times than he can count, by aliens, robots and wayward satellites. And we have to admire Shatner's "raw nerve" for lining up such a high-profile assortment of guests: Jon Voight, Jimmy Kimmel, Jenna Jameson, Kelsey Grammer, Valerie Bertinelli and Leonard Nimoy. I mean, Leonard Nimoy? What the hell are William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy going to talk about?

You know, when I read that the producers would "make an effort to book guests separately from their movie and other junkets," I didn't realize that that meant they would mainly book aging stars with nothing currently going on in their lives. Okay, Kimmel at least has a job, but what are the rest of those people doing nowadays? (Apparently, hanging out with William Shatner -- I suppose there are worse fates.) Of course, given that Shatner "will explore life's most intriguing questions and unearth his guests' strange and unknown stories," it's probably a good idea to book stars who have been around the block a few times, since they've actually gained some insight into life as well as a litany of bizarre experiences to reference. That said, I'm not sure that I want to hear Jenna Jameson's contributions to either of those categories.
