TV Land is So Over Reruns

One of the few remaining cable nets with a unique brand identity is kicking that narrowcasting ish to the curb, son! TV Land told the Wall Street Journal that by the end of 2009, 50% of their programming will be original series. It's so hard to say goodbye to my Sunday afternoon hungover viewings of Bonanza, but the good news is that they'll be focusing on creating trashy reality shows. Because we need more of those. The article highlights one such gem, Cougar, which is exactly what it sounds like: a Bachelorette for older ladies looking for younger gents. They'll also be looking to air reruns of more recent series, like Friends. Because we need more of those.

May-December showmances and crappy sitcoms aside, this news is annoying, but it was inevitable. Apparently mostly middle-aged people watched all those Leave It to Beaver and Gunsmoke reruns, and advertisers hate middle-aged people for some reason (which has never made any sense to me. My parents spend more money on worthless crap than everyone I know in my age bracket combined, and I know they're not a unique example.), so they're diversifying. They show movies all the time as it is, and they already have original series like that George Foreman reality show and some High School Reunion show that I know nothing about but that Angel loves, so it's not like it's a whole new thing. And then there's the classic examples of MTV, VH1 and A&E, which hardly show any of the things in their names anymore. Advertising dollars will make a network do anything, no matter how crazy or annoying. I'm just waiting for the day BET realizes Legally Blonde does gangbusters for TBS and starts airing it for cash.
