Justified: The Shot of the Week

Justified: The Shot of the Week

"Coalition" was clearly setting us up for next week's -- *tear* -- season finale... while kicking serious ass in in the process. Quarles has essentially become a comic book villain at this point (it's not Neal McDonough's first time at the rodeo, after all), but I'm fine with that since I don't recall Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan using a shotgun as a pipe to smoke Oxycontin with a couple of prostitutes while chained naked inside a trailer. I don't think so, anyways. At the episode's end, we have a recently burned Quarles and hallucinating Arlo missing in action, Dickie with a bullet in the gut, a presumably frustrated high-powered mobster floating around somewhere, Limehouse working with Raylan, Van Halen fan Loretta with Mag's multimillion dollar fortune and Boyd... wait, where's Boyd?

The Shot of the Week goes to whoever fired the final shot at Trooper Tom Bergen... Johnny claims it's Quarles, and I believe him, but that doesn't explain where Boyd is. It does, however, sum up how awesome Justified is. Not only did "Coalition" once again bring up the question of what these people would even do with $4 million (I for one, am still waiting to see what's going to happen with Charlie in Mexico), the show consistently rewards us before we can get too frustrated -- rather than wanting to choke Boyd for being dumb enough to get remotely involved in Dickie Bennett's eternally idiotic crap, we watched him, well, 1) Suffocate Dickie with a plastic bag without quite killing our crazy-haired squirrely friend and 2) Conjure up a plan of his own. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean nobody's out to get you, and just because you think you have a foolproof plan, it doesn't mean that Raylan isn't one step ahead of you, about to haul your ass back to jail. I'm glad our marshal had the sense to follow the car fire instead of staking himself out at the bank and that he's now working with Limehouse to get "big stupid baby head" Quarles out of "disease-ridden whore factory" Harlan, but I just have no idea what's going to happen next week in "Slaughterhouse."

Actually, that's a lie. We know Quarles is going to die. There's no way he's not going to die. I guess it's time to place our bets how it's going to happen, and if it can compare to Mags Bennett's "it was in the glass" final moments and be a Wynn-Wynn for us all. Using Raylan's context clues via his amazing Wizard of Oz review, I suggest we stick with it and see what happens. In case you were also too freaked out by the flying monkeys, I can confirm that at the end, when they pull the curtain back, it turns out the guy is, indeed, kind of a pussy.
