Modern Family: Please, No Photos

This wasn't the worst episode of this show -- we've seen how truly awful it can get -- but the utter pointlessness of this outing was hard to top. Also, it was so forgettable that I watched "iSpy" last night, and this morning when I woke up, I could hardly remember any of the details so I had to watch it again. It didn't improve on repeat viewing. At all.

Modern Family: All Dinner, No Show

Modern Family: All Dinner, No Show

After last week's pretty solid episode, I was kind of not dreading this one, but instead this "Three Dinners" offering was totally unpalatable and as excruciating as sitting through a dinner with Mitchell and Cam where they discuss Syria. Also, the whole episode was a total waste of some really talented guest stars.

Maybe it's the budding fever that hit me last night, but "Under Pressure" may have been my favorite episode so far this season. I credit that not to the onslaught of guest stars, but more to the super-fast pacing that really just had this episode moving right along with quick laughs and away from stuff that wasn't as amusing. Here are the moments, from worst to best.

Maybe we're still on a sugar high from all of the holiday cookies, but "And One to Grow On" felt like it hit just the right notes (well, mostly). It didn't exactly knock it out of the park in the comedy department, but it did really nail the family dynamic. Maybe we were just happy to see Adam DeVine again? In any case, here are the best and worst parts of the episode.

Modern Family: It’s A Long, Long Way to Canada, Eh?

Since we're in the spirit of the holiday season, we're going to start with the positive facts about "The Old Man and the Tree". If you don't want to deal with the negativity this time of year, you can just stop reading when you get to the Jay/Tree nonsense. Our anger and annoyance at that stupidity will be still be around waiting to be read in the new year.

Modern Family: Get Your Head in the Game

We've been excited to see more of Cam's football coaching since the topic was introduced at the beginning of the season, but we've been given just tiny glimpses of it since then. So we were excited for "The Big Game" and while the Cam stuff was pretty good, the rest of the episode could have used some motivational speaking.

Modern Family: Farm Livin’ Is the Life For Me

There was actually some fairly entertaining stuff in "ClosetCon '13," aside from the titular ClosetCon itself. It still seemed like there was just one too many plots crammed into this show, but that seems an inevitable fact now that the kids are getting older, so we're just going to try our best to get over it. If they keep parodying famous movies/events (i.e. last week's cop drama, this week's space trip), we're more likely to forgive them.

Modern Family: The Anniversary Party Disaster

Modern Family: The Anniversary Party Disaster

We thought that after a few weeks off, we'd be thrilled to see a new installment of Modern Family, but "A Fair to Remember" is an outing that we'd largely like to forget… though we'd be down with watching the Dad Beats (featuring special guest Harold the pharmacist) any time. The episode suffered from a lot of promising ideas (yes, really) that largely fell flat and would have been better off if the show didn't feel the need to give almost every character a subplot in every episode. It's an ensemble, but that doesn't mean that everyone needs equal screentime every single week.

Modern Family: Be Our Guest

Modern Family: Be Our Guest

Even though "The Help" was chock full of guest stars (Fred Willard, Adam DeVine, Nathan Lane and Peri Gilpin), all those familiar faces didn't really help to make it a fantastic episode. Sure there were some laugh-out-loud moments, but those all came from the regular crew. While there were great bits of dialogue, the plotlines in general left us a little cold. All we know for sure is that whoever is responsible for the Lily stuff lately really deserves a raise.

Modern Family: Better Late Than Never?

Modern Family: Better Late Than Never?

Is this a sign of how the whole season is going to go? One decent episode followed by one that we'd like to entirely forget? Because if that's the plan, we'd like to just opt out of watching every other week. "The Late Show" was so terrible, that we'd like to not only skip, but also erase from our brains all of the storylines that involved adults in any way shape or form. We've seen infinitely funnier attempts at trying to get swanky food -- from Seinfeld's waiting game at the Chinese restaurant to the recent New Girl where Winston staked out seats while everyone else was having screaming fights.
