Star Trek: The Next Generation boldly goes onto Blu-ray.

Star Trek: The Next Generation -- The Next Level
A few years back, Paramount landed itself in hot water when it started releasing remastered episodes of the original Star Trek series with new effects and other digital touch-ups. While these added bells and whistles initially inspired some controversy, overall the fan reaction was far less vitriolic than the brouhaha generated over George Lucas's constant tinkering with Star Wars. Now the studio is lavishing similar treatment on the second live-action Trek series, The Next Generation as they transfer it to Blu-ray. Technicians will be going back to the original TNG film to remaster episodes for high-def, recompositing all of the effects instead of just upconverting from video transfers. Full season sets will start being made available later this year, but for now, here's a three-episode sampler of what's in store, starting with the pilot "Encounter at Farpoint." As Picard might say, fans have been hoping for Blu-ray editions of TNG and now Paramount has made it so.
Extras: Nothing yet. Expect bonus features to accompany the box sets when those start arriving on shelves.

Pac-Man: The Complete First Season
It may be hard to remember in this era of Grant Theft Auto and God of War, but a simple little arcade game called Pac-Man was once the King of All Video Games, one that spawned a host of spin-offs, including a song ("Pac-Man Fever") and this animated TV series from Saturday morning cartoon experts Hanna-Barbera. In the world of the show, Pac-Man was re-conceived as a typical husband and father who in Pac-Land and battled the Ghost Monsters, servants of the villainous, Power Pellet-mad Mezmaron. All thirteen episodes from the show's first season are included here, with the second (and last) season sure to follow in a few months.
Extras: None.

Also on DVD:
If Pac-Man isn't enough kiddie nostalgia for you, how about Hey Dude: Season Two, the sophomore year of Nickelodeon's dude ranch-set sitcom. Agatha Christie's classic sleuth makes the Blu-ray jump as well with Poirot: Series 1, which collects the first batch of episodes in the long-running British series starring estimable British thespian David Suchet as the mustachioed Belgian P.I.
